Painted wood furniture can be beautiful and elegant, adding more character or a focal point to a room in your home. However, painted wood furniture doesn’t look as good once the paint begins to peel and peel. If you have one or two pieces of furniture like this and want to give them new life, the first step is to remove the old paint.

The process is very user-friendly, but it is important to complete the process carefully to get the best results. Check out the steps below on how to remove paint from wooden furniture.

Revitalize your old furniture

Whether you have an old table in your basement or bought some promising chairs for a used theft, reviving wooden furniture isn’t as difficult as you might think. If you follow these steps and take the necessary precautions, you will be able to remove the old paint from your wooden furniture, give it a fresh coat and make it look brand new.

Step 1: Led paint test.

The US government banned the sale of lead paint to consumers in 1978. If you have furniture that was made before that date, chances are it has this dangerous paint. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially in children. If there is any chance that your furniture has lead paint, test it before beginning the removal process.

Use a DIY lead paint test kit that has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. This kit should include 3M LeadCheck and D-Lead. The test kit should also provide instructions on how to remove a paint sample, how much to remove, and how to test it. You can also send paint scrapings to a lab for testing. If you discover that your furniture has lead paint, do not scrape or sand it. Instead, hire a professional to remove it safely.

2nd step: Protect anything that is not painted.

Remove all hinges, knobs and handles from the part you intend to paint and store them somewhere so they don’t get damaged or misplaced. If the furniture has areas you don’t need to remove paint from, such as upholstery, cover those sections with heavy plastic sheets so they won’t be damaged by chemicals and sanding .

Step 3: Peel off the finish.

Before removing paint from furniture, you must first remove the finish. If the part has a lacquer finish, remove it with lacquer thinner and shellac with denatured alcohol. If the finish is a combination of lacquer and shellac, use a mixture of half lacquer thinner and half denatured alcohol.

When using chemicals, wear rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator. Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors.

Step 4: Remove the paint.

There are several ways to remove paint from your wood furniture. A single method will probably not be enough to remove all the paint; you will most likely need to use a combination of these strategies.

heat gun

A heat gun looks like a hair dryer and blows air hot enough to melt the paint. This can remove varnish and multiple layers of paint and minimize the amount of dust generated. Beware, however, that it can release dangerous fumes.

If you decide to use a heat gun, read the instructions and follow them carefully so you don’t start a fire. Turn the heat gun to its lowest setting, hold it a safe distance from furniture, and move it slowly in circles. The paint will soften and curl, then you can scrape it off.

The heat gun will most likely get rid of some or most of the paint, but not all of it. Then use a paint stripper.

Paint stripper

Paint strippers come in liquid, gel or paste form. This product allows you to access nooks and crannies inaccessible with a heat gun.

Caustic paint strippers contain lye, which turns old paint into a soapy film. Solvents also separate the paint from the wood, but they release fumes that can be dangerous. Biochemical paint strippers take longer to work than other types, and you may have to spend more time scraping, but they release less toxic fumes. A citrus-based stripper is non-toxic and non-corrosive and may even leave a pleasant smell.

Before using a stripper, lightly sand the surface to allow the product to penetrate deeper into the paint. Follow the instructions carefully and allow sufficient time for the paint stripper. You should be able to scrape off the remaining paint with minimal effort. If you don’t wait long enough, you’ll need to do a few more scrapes. If you wait too long, however, the paint may harden.

Remember to wear rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Sanding

If you’re short on time or prefer not to use chemicals, you can remove paint from your wood furniture using an electric straight or orbital sander. A sander is a particularly good choice for large, flat surfaces. Pro Tip: If possible, hook up the sander to a vacuum so it can collect dust while you work.

Only use a sander if you know how to do it correctly. Failure to do so can cause serious damage to furniture and possibly even to yourself.

Metal paint scraper scraping blue paint from wood

By following these steps, your furniture will be stripped of its old chipped paint in no time and ready for fresh paint and new life. You’ll be amazed at the amazing DIY projects you can upcycle with a little know-how.

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem presented the results of a new 3D printable wood ink from August 21-25 at the American chemical society (ACS) Fall 2022 event. The material is printed flat and then can transform into a complex 3D shape, with researchers suggesting the possibility of furniture or other wood products being made this way in the future.

The way the material works is similar to how in nature, plants and some animals can alter their own shapes and textures. Even after a tree is felled, its wood can change shape as it dries. It shrinks unevenly and warps due to variations in fiber orientation in the wood.

“Warping can be a hindrance,” said Doron Kam, a graduate student presenting the work. “We thought we could try to understand this phenomenon and exploit it in a desirable morph.”

Eran Sharon, Ph.D., one of the project’s lead researchers, explained that man-made structures usually can’t shape themselves, but in recent years scientists have started printing flat sheets that could morph into shapes. 3D after a stimulus, such as a change in temperature.

Most previous automorph sheets were made from synthetic materials, such as gels and elastomers. “We wanted to go back to the origin of this concept, to nature, and to do it with wood,” said Sharon.

The research began a few years ago, when the team developed an environmentally friendly water-based ink made from microparticles of wood waste called wood flour mixed with cellulose nanocrystals and xyloglucan. These are natural binders extracted from plants.

The team quickly discovered, after using the ink in a 3D printer, that the way the ink is deposited dictates the morphing behavior, as the moisture content evaporates from the printed part.

For example, a flat disc printed as a series of concentric circles dries and shrinks to form a saddle-like structure similar to a Pringle potato chip. A disc printed as a series of rays emanating from a central point transforms into a dome or cone-shaped structure.

The final shape of the object can be controlled by adjusting the print speed, as the shrinkage occurs perpendicular to the wood fibers in the ink, with the print speed changing the degree of fiber alignment. A slower print speed leaves the particles oriented more randomly, so shrinkage occurs in all directions. Faster printing aligns the fibers with each other, making shrinkage more directional.

The team found that stacking two rectangular layers printed in different orientations will produce a helix after drying. The team hopes that in the future, further refinement will allow saddles, domes, helices and other design patterns to be combined to produce objects with complicated final shapes, such as a chair.

Ultimately, it might be possible to create wood products that ship flat to the end user, reducing volume and shipping costs, and then have the product turn into its expected shape when unpacked.

Another goal Sharon hopes to achieve with the technology is to make it possible to license the technology for home use, allowing customers to design and print their own wooden objects with a 3D printer.

Speaking about the team exploring the possibility of making the material reversible, Sharon said: “We hope to show that under certain conditions we can make these elements reactive, to humidity for example, when we want to change the shape again. of an object.”

Have you ever heard the saying, “you either love it or hate it, there’s no in-between”? People usually use this phrase when talking about something unconventional or controversial that they love (or hate).

While I think things are rarely black and white (we all know I need more nuance than that), I know I used that “warning” when trying to get my friends and my family to try some of my favorite things, for example, the humble circus peanut candies (if you know, you know). It’s a way of acknowledging that a taste or trend isn’t for everyone, and that passion is expected and even welcome. Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.

Wooden furniture is something that can be surprisingly controversial when it comes to interior design. There are the purists who adhere to traditional wood stains to bring out the natural beauty of walnut, pine and cherry wood pieces, and there are those who bend the rules of tradition by exploring with color.

While we certainly love both, and I have a mix of both in my house, today we celebrate beloved painted pieces. They are a great way to refresh and rejuvenate your home and of course, add a splash of color.

Painted wood furniture is everywhere you look. For those following the trend, gray, white and even shades of blue are perfect to start your collection.

Shades play well with natural wood finishes and upholstery for a pop of brightness anywhere you want it. This allows for a mix of old and new styles that create a breathtaking display in any home. A simple color means you can also play with different textures, whether it’s a colorful stain or a full lacquer look, without overwhelming your space.

You’ll find a bold statement on the other side of the color spectrum. The pinks, reds and greens of the world are perfect for children’s rooms and fashion-forward decorating spaces. Manufacturers have significantly expanded the range of colors and shades of wood finishes they offer.

What do you think of the painted furniture trend? Your team loves it, the team hates it, or maybe you’re one of the elusive middlemen? There’s no right or wrong when it comes to decorating your home, and it’s the best thing to do to find your own style.

Whether it’s a dresser you’ve owned for years or a unique chair you found at an antique store, there are a handful of creative ways to breathe new life into worn-out furniture. One of the most common materials you’ll come across when refreshing old rooms is wood, which can quickly be turned into something beautiful with nothing more than a coat of paint.

“Painting or repainting your furniture isn’t just a cost-effective way to personalize your home, refresh tired furniture, or conceal cosmetic damage,” says Annie Sloan, paint and color expert and creator of Chalk Paint Annie Sloan. “It’s a way of life, rejecting the buy more, buy new, buy now culture, and embrace creative, practical, do-it-yourself expressionism.”

The best part? The process for painting wood furniture is the same across the board, which means you can use the materials required for more than one project, whether it’s a desk, chair, furniture. dresser or vanity, the same steps apply.

The materials you will need

You will need a few basic tools and materials to complete this project:

  • Protective canvas
  • painter’s tape
  • 180 and 220 grit abrasive sponges
  • Damp cloth
  • Primer
  • To paint
  • Brush
  • Safety mask
  • sealant

Primer Type

The type of wood you are working with will determine the type of primer you use. Wood that isn’t stained needs a high-quality latex or oil-based primer, while wood that’s stained needs a stain-blocking primer (like redwood and cedar) . Also, furniture that has exposed wood, chalking, or peeling paint needs an oil-based primer. Sloan also notes that you should use a water-based primer if using water-based paints and varnish-based products if using varnish-based paints.

Kind of paint

Experts recommend using chalk paint, also known as chalk finish or chalk paint. It’s a simple and elegant way to upgrade and transform your furniture, says Gary McCoy, manager of the Lowe’s store that serves the Charlotte, North Carolina market. “Different from chalkboard paint, it’s a latex paint that has a fine powder added to the mix to create a unique matte finish,” he says. “The brushstroke and blemishes are part of the unique look.”

brush type

The type of brush you use depends on the type of finish you want. “Flat brushes with smooth bristles will even out the paint as you apply it and give a smooth, flat, modern finish,” says Sloan. The variety of paint you use will also dictate the type of brush you choose. “Use a synthetic bristle paintbrush for latex paint and a natural bristle paintbrush for oil paint,” says McCoy.

How to prepare furniture for painting

Before you dip your paintbrush into the paint, there are a few steps you need to take to make sure your wood furniture is ready for the job.

Remove drawers and hardware

First, start by removing drawers, shelves and hardware from your furniture. If you want to paint the inside, now is also the time to remove the back of your piece, if possible. “If you see screws inside the front of a drawer box, the drawer may have a removable front piece that will be easier to paint than the entire drawer,” says McCoy. “So remove the screws to see if the front can be lifted freely. If you have more than one drawer with a removable front, be sure to label the fronts and drawers for easy reassembly.

Sand your wooden furniture

Place furniture on a tarp or drop cloth to catch debris and paint while you work. Now it’s time to sand. If you’re working with a surface that has an existing finish that’s already smooth, McCoy says to sand with a 220-grit sanding sponge, then wipe with a damp cloth. For slightly rough surfaces, sand with 180- and 220-grit abrasive sponges. “Always wipe sanded furniture with a damp cloth to collect dust,” says Sloan. “Otherwise the particles will accumulate and show through the paint.”

Add a primer

Once your piece is sanded and wiped clean, block off any areas you don’t want painted with painter’s tape, such as hardware and hinges that you can’t easily remove. Then put on a face mask to protect yourself from fumes and add your primer. “Whether or not you need to prime depends on the type and condition of the surface. Always prime and sand bare wood or damaged surfaces that have been patched,” says McCoy.

To prep your furniture, brush in the direction of the grain and let dry. “An angled frame brush is handy for getting into corners,” says McCoy. Once it has the first coat of primer, sand the surface with a 220 grit abrasive sponge and wipe clean. Then apply a second coat of primer, if necessary, to ensure a smooth base for your paint.

How to paint wooden furniture

At this point, your piece should be sanded, primed, and laid on a drop cloth, which means you’re finally ready to paint. Wait to remove your protective mask until the project is complete.

Add paint

Dip your brush into your paint and begin by brushing back and forth just enough to spread the paint and always in the direction of the grain of the wood or along the length of an already painted surface. “Hold the brush loosely in your hand and move from your armpit rather than your wrist or elbow to allow for big, wide strokes,” says Sloan. “The number of coats needed will depend on the surface you’re painting, how thick you apply the paint, and the color you’ve chosen.”

Repair any defect

After applying the first coat of paint, McCoy says to check for drips and drips. “If you find one after the paint has completely dried, be sure to sand it down carefully,” he says. “If you see paint building up on your sandpaper, stop immediately to prevent the paint from scratching the surface.” When the surface is dry and you’ve sanded the flaws, add another thin coat to conceal the repairs. “A painted surface that feels dry to the touch may not be ready for sanding or recoating, so carefully follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for dry times,” says McCoy.

Seal the paint

Although adding sealant is an optional step, Sloan recommends sealing the paint with chalk after it dries, as it is a water-based product and could transfer if applied. is not protected. “Use clear chalk paint wax, matte or gloss chalk paint lacquer and apply it over the entire painted surface,” she says. Once dry, you can replace the removed drawers and hardware.

Repair all faults

“The concept of lightness interests me a lot,” writes Spanish architect/designer Andrés Mariño Maza. “I equate lightness with efficiency; for example the structural efficiency necessary for the flight of a bird, materialized in a highly optimized hollow skeleton.

In its quest for lightness, Maza uses steam bending techniques used by boat builders to create furniture made from incredibly thin strips of material. Here is his Barlovento stool, made from American red oak:

His Nina & Beni chair is made from American walnut and ash:

Its Flect Rocker is also made from American walnut and ash:

Here’s a look at Maza’s production process, which begins with a five-axis CNC milling machine used to create the shapes the wood is clamped to:

A quick word on steam bending:

When I was still living in New York, I trained in martial arts with a well-known doctor in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). A patient had come to him complaining of chest pain; he had seen several Western doctors, they had all done tests, and no one could figure out what was wrong with him.

Initially, the TCM doctor also couldn’t find the cause of the patient’s chest pain, until he found out what the patient was doing for a living. He made steam-bent furniture, spending much of the day pressing hot strips of wood into molds.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the palms are believed to be internally linked to the heart, and the TCM doctor told the patient that spending all day burning his palms essentially overheated his heart and caused pain. The patient changed his workshop habits and the pain disappeared.
