Forest Service distributes $ 15 million in wood products and forest subsidies

WASHINGTON – The Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently awarded more than $ 15 million to fund 60 projects. The grants will help develop and expand the use of wood products, strengthen emerging wood energy markets and protect community forests.

“To manage forest fires and fight the climate, we need to manage our forests,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said. “Today’s investments underpin USDA’s commitment to tackle the climate crisis with a market-based approach that begins to steer us towards a clean energy economy, led by the production of renewable fuel and energy and bio-based products grown and manufactured here in the United States. and USDA’s budget request for 2022 ensures that the forest service can prioritize forest management and restoration.

“We are focusing on helping woodfuel installations in economically disadvantaged areas to retool or add advanced technology to replace inefficient or fossil-fueled systems,” said Vicki Christiansen, head of the forest service. “The grants will also expand markets for cross-laminated timber in commercial and multi-family housing, supporting the important link with healthy forests and manufacturing in rural communities.”

In addition to the Forest Service grants, there is $ 30 million in matching funds and partners, bringing the totals to over $ 45 million. The funding is divided into two programs: the Wood Innovations Grants and the Community Wood Grants.

This is according to the findings of a new report produced by the African Natural Resources Center of the African Development Bank.

The report, Intra-African Trade in Wood Products – Case studies from Benin, Cameroon, Ghana and the Republic of Congo, published in May this year, explores the role that forest value chains can play in promoting development goals. of Africa.

The continent’s significant forest resources are underutilized, the report notes. DENR signs MoU for value-added wood products

The Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Frank Cimatu, signs the memorandum of understanding with officials of the Asian Forestry Cooperation Organization.

The DENR will implement the project through the Forest Management Office and the DENR field offices in regions 7 and 13.

State and federal agencies hope to clear the forests around the region’s scattered communities, and a processing plant is seen as a way to deal with raw material discarded by the effort.

And the plant could employ more than 150 workers in a county that consistently has a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the state.

To facilitate the process of settling in Libby, local authorities are exploring ways to secure the dollars needed to bring needed equipment to the area.

On July 2, Lincoln County Port Authority board members considered the possibility of securing a loan through the county for Corey Bitton, the owner of the business called upon to operate the factory.

In August 2020, the State of California and the US Forest Service (USFS) agreed to significantly increase the number of wooded acres they treat each year through mechanical thinning and prescribed burning.
